No. 1 seed Dali BLANCH (USA) who looked unbeatable succumbed Thursday night to Brazilian Pedro BOSCARDIN DIAS in 3 sets by 3-6, 6-3, 7-6. Part of the very strong contingent from Brazil, BOSCARDIN was able to claim the win in a hotly contested match. In the other match in the top half of the draw, Leo BORG continued his quest to the final by comfortably dispatching Bruno KUZUHARA 6-3, 6-4. Leo plays like his father in a calculated unemotional manner, all business on the court.

In the bottom half of the draw, no. 2 seed Natan RODRIGUEZ had to go to 3 sets to turn back Frenchman Mehdi SADAOUI by 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. This was the second 3 setter for RODRIGUES who does not so much dominate as outlast his opponents. JC RODDICK filled out the other match in the second half of the draw by beating back Mexican Rafael DE ALBA VALDES 6-7, 6-2. 6-1. This was the second night in a row where the American lost the first set and came back to win, wearing down DE ALBA and taking 10 of the last 12 games.

This keeps alive the hopes of some tennis fans who want to see a son/nephew of tennis legends final BORG/RODDICK. Two highly talented players from Brazil think otherwise and will try to act the the role of spoilers tonight.

Action in the Girls Draw saw the continued demise of seeded players with the loss of seeds 8, 11, and 15. Only the last (16th) seeded player remains. In the top half of the draw Alexis BLOKHINA beat the tough no. 8 seed Sofia ROJAS of USA in 3 grueling sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 and Alexia HARMON (USA) beat back Melisa ERCAN of Turkey 6-3, 6-3. ERCAN quietly made the quarterfinals but was not a match for the tough HARMON on Stadium Court.

In the bottom half of the draw 16th seeded Lan MI of China beat Rebecca LYNN of USA by 6-0, 6-1, a surprisingly lopsided score for a quarterfinal match. LI now remains the only seeded player in the draw. Rounding out the last quarterfinal match, the fragile looking Nevena CARTON (USA) easily beat her doubles partner Lola RADIVOJEVIC of Serbia by 6-1, 6-2. The unseeded CARTON has been progressing quietly in the draw and has dispatched seeds no. 7, 12, and 15 and is a player to watch going into the semifinals against MI.
