Unseasonal weather continues to hamper 2018 Copa
Weather has been the nemesis of this tournament and once again unseasonal rains halted play during the afternoon. But with only 32 matches programmed, down half from the previous 2 days, the weather delay was not a serious problem and play continued in the 4 “back up” covered courts of the Costa Rica Country Club. The singles round of 16 was completed without difficulty, as was the second round of doubles.

In Boys singles play the top half of the draw saw 3 of 4 seeds progress to the quarterfinals including top seed Trey HILDERBRAND, 8TH seed Brandon NAKASHIMA and 7TH seed Keenan MAYO. Unseeded Toby KODAT took the fourth spot in the top half as earlier defeats of seeded players opened up this part of the draw which is an all USA affair. All of these matches were won in straight sets.

The bottom half of the Boys draw was more challenging for winners with 3 of 4 matches going to 3 sets. These matches included sixth seed Tyler ZINK over the versatile Vietnamese Phuong Van Nguyen, brazilean 3RD seed Mateus ALVES defeating Frenchman Arthur CAZAUX, and another Frenchman, unseeded Harold MAYOT taking down the 5th seed Argentine Facundo Diaz in a hard fought last match of night play. The last place in the draw was secured by the unseeded Peruvian Sebastian RODRIGUEZ who has now taken out 2 seeded players, NANDA of USA seeded 2 in round 2 and SEPULVEDA of MEX seeded 15 in round 3. So at least one unseeded player will make it to the semifinals.

As with the Boys draw, the Girls singles draw features a greater concentration of seeded players than the more open bottom half of the draw. In the top half top seed Maria Camila OSORIO of Colombia continues to win but not by wide margins as she has pulled out a couple of tie breakers and a 3 setter in the third round. Fifth seed Chloe BECK of USA bested no. 11 seed Pilar ASTIGARRAGA of Spain in straight sets and Elizabeth MANDLIK (USA) outlasted Sanyukta GAWANDE (USA) in a tense 3 hour 3 set marathon 6-7, 6-4, 7-5 on Stadium Court in night play. The last spot in the top half of the draw was taken by unseeded Charlotte OWENSBY of USA over Lauren STEIN (USA) in straight sets. OWENSBY, ranked 644 and the last player into the Main Draw at the Qualy cutoff, defeated Ana GELLER (ARG) seeded 8 in the first round, Imani GRAHAM of USA ranked 519, and STEIN ranked 248. Charlotte is a player to watch.

In the bottom half of the Girls draw no. 9 seed Canadian Alexandra VAGRAMOV defeated no. 6 seed Sabina DADACIU of USA in a tough 3 sets 6-3, 4-6. 6-4. No. 14 Skyler GRISHUK of USA won easily over unseeded Mackenzie CLARK of USA 6-2. 6-2. CLARK´s dream Copa ended after beating the no. 3 seed RIVERA of Guatemala in round 1 and Kennedy BRIDGFORTH (USA) in the second round, both players with much better rankings. Seventh seed Lea MA of USA dispatched Nicole HAMMOND of USA in straight sets. Last year MA was defeated in the third round by the eventual winner Emily APPLETON, but in 2018 Lea has at least assured the quarterfinals and perhaps more as she now faces unseeded Nikki REDELIJK of USA. Nikki ranked 405 has had a great tournament turning back CHAVES (CRC), BARCENA (MEX), and COLLINS (USA) in the first 3 rounds.

In second round doubles play 6 seeded Boys pairs march into the third round quarterfinals, including seeds 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8. Only 3 of these matches went to the 3rd set tiebreak. In the Girls doubles draw only 4 of 8 winners are seeded including no. 1,3, 6, and 7. Only the no. 1 seeded team remains in the top half of the draw. Four of the 8 matches went to the 3rd set tiebreak.
