After the intensity of first round singles play on Monday, Tuesday is almost equally intense with another 64 matches played on the courts of the Costa Rica Country Club. At a comfortable 75 degrees F. (24 degrees Celsius) and under sunny blue skies, Day 2 witnessed Round 2 of Singles play and Round 1 of Doubles in the afternoon.

In the Boys Main Draw most seeds advanced so that Round 3 action on Wednesday will feature many seeded matchups. Nine of these seeded wins were in straight sets, and the numbers 1 and 2 seeds Alberto LIM (PHI) and Ulises BLANCH (USA) look true to their rankings with relentless wins over strong but overmatched opponents.

The biggest upsets of the day in the Boys draw were posted by Kyrylo TSYGURA of USA ranked 544 who overtook no. 9 seed Dan ADDED of France ranked 146. Kyrylo was a wild card into the Qualy so this was his fourth match of the tournament. The other significant upset was posted by Jaimee ANGEL of France ranked 509 who defeated no. 7 seed Alexis CANTER of Britain, ranked 132, by a score of 7-6, 6-4. In night play Zeke CLARK of USA seeded 3 delighted the crowd in a hard fought contest to turn back Franco RIBERO of Argentina by 6-7, 6-2. 6-2.

The Girls Singles Draw was more unpredictable as several seeded players went down. In the first round 15 of 16 seeds advanced, but in the second, 6 of the 15 were eliminated, including no. 2 seed Abigail DESIATNIKOV of USA who was dispatched by the Italian Maria Vittoria VIVIANI in 3 sets by 6-0, 2-6, 6-3. This unpredictable situation opens up the draw, especially the top half as several unseeded players will advance deep into the draw.

Players to watch are Emily APPLETON of Britain (daughter of a 1978 Copa doubles champion), Malene HELGO (NOR), Layne SLEETH (CAN), Tatiana PIERI (ITA), and Taylor BRIDGES (USA) who are all punching above their weight. Time will tell if any of these girls, or other talented seeded players, can be a match for no. 1 seed Amanda ANISIMOVA of Russia.

First round Doubles play went into the late afternoon with some matches finished under the lights. In the Boys Doubles 7 of 8 seeded pairs advanced, with the no. 2 seeds eliminated by the Scandinavian tandem ATLEVI (SWE) / HOLMGREN (DEN). The situation was similar in Girls Doubles with all 8 seeded teams advancing.
