Monday is a hectic day at any tennis tournament, and so it is at the Copa del Café with 64 first round matches to be played (32 Boys and 32 Girls) on 10 courts. The weather has been cooperative with perfect sunshine, 22 degree C. temperature, and just a bit of a morning breeze.

The Girls started first and several upsets in the first half of the draw have opened up possibilities for several players. The most notable of these upsets were wins by Gabriella POLLNER of USA ranked 1520 over Irina LIDKOVSKAYA of Russia ranked 339 and by Julia SOICA of France (963) over Elizabeth SUTHERLAND of USA (467).

Boys action took place in the afternoon. Results were generally by the book as better ranked players bested those of lesser rank and 14 of 16 seeds advanced. A notable upset was Kalman BOYD of USA ranked 681 defeating Jordi ARCONADA of ARG ranked 128 by the score of 6-4, 6-0.

But the most notable and delightful results for local tennis fans was night play at Stadium Court, in two acts. First, local favorite Ariana RAHMANPARAST got past Delaney EDWARDS of USA by 6-0, 7-5, from where Ariana will next meet the no. 1 seed Marie BOUZKOVA. Act two was the second night match thriller where local Julian SABORIO ranked 662 surprised no. 10 seed Edan LESHEM of Israel (ranked 165) by the score of 7-6, 7-6. Julian will next meet Riki OSHIMA of Japan
